The Royal Guide Dog, the breeding company
owned by Wally Cochran |
So when did labradoodles actually start being bred? It was surprisingly not that long ago! In 1988, a man named Wally Cochran tested the DNA of many dogs, and eventually made a cross between a lab and a poodle to create the perfect guide dog. Not only was the dog well mannered like a poodle, but friendly like a Labrador.
While the labradoodle was created for the purpose of becoming a seeing dog, the breed started to grow in popularity because of the amount of diversity in color and size of the dogs. Breeders began to breed away from the dogs with shedding coats, so that now almost all labradoodles are 100% hypoallergenic! So really there remains the question of, if labradoodles were originally created to be seeing dogs, is it bad that we have so turned them into designer dogs for the common family?
